Tying 4 safas in 1 minute: new record
The 25-year-old learnt the complicated art of tying a safa when he was 12.
It usually takes a person about 15 minutes to tie a safa, or a turban, but 25-year-old Chanan Singh managed to tie four safas in under a minute, and registered the record in the India Book of Records recently. He says, “I was 12 when I learnt how to tie a safa, and I won the safa tying competition in Jodhpur for two years in a row in 2014 and 2015.

So then I decided to set a record and get it registered. It’s not an easy art, tying a turban is quite complicated.” He adds, “I managed to tie four safas in 53 seconds, which means one in 13 seconds. I didn’t go for the fifth because that would have taken a little over a minute and the record had to be set in under a minute.”
Singh is from Jodhpur, but last year he moved to Jaipur to prepare for competitive exams. “I’ve done MA in economics from Jodhpur, and I want to be a teacher. Hamari aarthik stithi sahi nahi thi, toh maine soch liya tha ki padhai ke saath-saath paise bhi kamane hain. I travel all over the country for weddings, where I’m asked to tie safas for the functions. I haven’t asked for money from my family after Class XII,” he explains.
